Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov!
This Shabbat, we mark Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av and will conclude the Book of Bemidbar (Numbers) with two powerful Torah portions.
Parashat Matot:
This portion begins by discussing the power of words and vows, teaching us the importance of keeping our promises. It then describes the war against Midian—the only war detailed so thoroughly in the Torah. This war teaches us about Jewish vengeance, moral purity, and our spiritual responsibility in conflict.
Parashat Masei:
This portion closes the book by reviewing the 40-year journey in the desert. Every stop on this journey was a chance for growth and to shape our identity. The Parasha ends with the division of the land and the cities of refuge—topics that highlight both personal and community responsibility.
Today, as enemies threaten us from all sides, we have no one to lean on but our Father in Heaven. We must rebuild our connection to the land.
We often call the month of Av “Menachem Av” (Av of Comfort). We all hope that this month, though known for destruction, will turn into a time of joy. We pray to see comfort and the Holy Temple rebuilt quickly in our days, Amen.

השבת, אנו מציינים את ראש חודש מנחם אב ונסיים את ספר במדבר עם שתי פרשיות עמוסות במסרים.
פרשת מטות:
פרשה זו פותחת בכוח המילה והנדרים, ומלמדת אותנו על החובה לעמוד בדיבורנו. משם היא עוברת לתיאור מלחמת מדין – המלחמה היחידה המתוארת בפירוט כה רב בתורה. המלחמה מלמדת אותנו על הנקמה היהודית, על הטוהר המוסרי ועל האחריות הרוחנית במלחמה.
פרשת מסעי:
פרשה זו סוגרת את הספר בסקירה של מסע 40 השנה במדבר. כל תחנה במסע היא הזדמנות לצמיחה ולעיצוב הזהות שלנו. הפרשה מסתיימת בחלוקת הארץ ובערי המקלט – נושאים המדגישים את האחריות האישית והקהילתית.
היום, כשאויבים מאיימים עלינו מכל עבר, אין לנו על מי להישען אלא על אבינו שבשמיים. עלינו לבנות מחדש את הקשר שלנו לארץ.
אנו נוהגים לכנות את חודש אב “מנחם אב”. כולנו מקווים שחודש זה, שאמנם מזוהה עם חורבן, יהפוך לזמן של שמחה. אנו מתפללים לראות בנחמה ולראות בבניין בית המקדש במהרה בימינו, אמן.
