Shabbat Shalom and blessings to everyone
This Shabbat we read Parashat Lech Lecha.
Here begins the story of our holy fathers.
Hashem tells Avraham:
“Go from your land, from your family, and from your father’s house, to the land that I will show you.”
Avram and Sarai listen to Hashem, and Hashem promises them:
“I will make you a great nation, I will bless you, and you will be a blessing.”
Avraham is chosen to bring blessing to the world.
Avram travels in the land, comes to Shechem and Beit El, and builds altars for Hashem.
He calls in the name of Hashem and teaches people about faith in one Creator.
Hashem tells him: “To your children I will give this land,”
the Land of Israel, our promised land.
Later there is hunger in the land, and Avram goes down to Egypt.
Pharaoh takes Sarai, but Hashem punishes him.
Then Pharaoh gives Sarai back to Avram and gives them much money and animals.
After that, the shepherds of Lot and the shepherds of Avram fight with each other.
Avram says to Lot:
“Please separate from me. If you go left, I will go right, and if you go right, I will go left.”
Lot chooses to live in Sodom, a city of bad people.
As we say, tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.
Later there is a war between four kings and five kings.
Lot is taken as a prisoner.
Avram goes to save him and wins the war.
Then Hashem makes a covenant with Avram.
Hashem promises him that his children will be many like the stars in the sky.
He also says that they will go down to Egypt and later leave with great wealth.
This is a sign of the future redemption that comes after hard times.
Sarai has no children, so she gives her servant Hagar to Avram to have a baby.
Hagar becomes pregnant and starts to feel better than Sarai.
Sarai is sad, and Hagar runs away.
An angel tells her to return and tells her that she will have a son, Yishmael.
“He will be a wild man.”
It says “wild man,” not “man who is wild,” because this is his nature, wild and without limits.
At the end of the parasha, Hashem changes their names.
Avram becomes Avraham, the father of many nations.
Sarai becomes Sarah, the mother of nations.
Hashem promises them a son, Yitzchak, who will continue the covenant.
Finally, Hashem commands Avraham about Brit Milah, the covenant between Hashem and the Jewish people.
“Every baby boy, eight days old, must be circumcised.”
Whoever is not circumcised, “that soul will be cut off from his people.”
Avraham himself was circumcised at the age of ninety nine.
This is something very special and strong.
I once did a Brit Milah for a man who was fifty years old.
I remember that moment, a man ready to change his body for his faith in Hashem.
It shows true belief and love for Hashem.
May we all come closer to Hashem, keep the covenant between us and Him,
and feel the holiness of life inside the people of Israel and inside each one of us.

שבת שלום ומבורך לכולם
השבת אנו נקרא בע”ה את פרשת לך לך כאן מתחיל סיפורם של כל אבותינו הקדושים.
הקב”ה מצווה את אברהם אבינו:
“לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך אל הארץ אשר אראך”.
אברם ושרי יוצאים בדבר ה’, והשם מבטיח להם:
“ואעשך לגוי גדול ואברכך ואגדלה שמך והיה ברכה”
אברהם נבחר להיות מקור ברכה לעולם כולו.
אברם עובר בארץ, מגיע לשכם ולבית אל, ובונה שם מזבחות לה’.
הוא מכריז ברבים את שם ה’, ומתחיל את שליחותו להפיץ אמונה באל אחד.
ה’ מוסיף ומבטיח לו: “לזרעך אתן את הארץ הזאת”
זו ארץ ישראל, הארץ המובטחת לנו.
בהמשך, כאשר יש רעב בארץ, אברם יורד למצרים.
פרעה לוקח את שרי, והקב”ה מעניש אותו, עד שפרעה מחזיר אותה לאברם ומעניק לו כסף ורכוש רב.
לאחר מכן פורצת מחלוקת בין רועי לוט לרועי אברם, ואברם אומר ללוט:
“היפרד נא מעלי אם השמאל ואימנה ואם הימין ואשמאילה”.
ולוט בוחר לשכון בסדום, עיר של רשעים.
נהוג לומר: אמור לי מי חברך ואומר לך מי אתה, ולוט אכן נמשך אחר תרבות המקום.
בהמשך מסופר על המלחמה בין ארבעת המלכים לחמשת המלכים, ולוט נשבה.
אברם יוצא למלחמה כדי להציל אותו ומנצח.
אחר כך ה’ כורת עם אברם את ברית בין הבתרים ומבטיח לו שיזכה לזרע רב “ככוכבי השמים” וששהארץ כולה תינתן לזרעו:
“לזרעך נתתי את הארץ הזאת מנהר מצרים עד הנהר הגדול נהר פרת”.
עם זאת נגזר על זרעו לרדת למצרים, אך גם ניתנת ההבטחה:
“ואחרי כן יצאו ברכוש גדול”
רמז לגאולה העתידית מתוך השעבוד.
אחר כך מסופר כי לשרי אין ילדים, והיא נותנת את שפחתה הגר לאברם כדי שתוליד לו בן בשמה.
הגר הרתה, ותחושת העליונות שלה פוגעת בשרי.
שרי כועסת, והגר בורחת.
המלאך נגלה אליה ואומר לה לשוב, ומבשר לה על הולדת ישמעאל
“והוא יהיה פרא אדם”.
שימו לב לסדר: לא נאמר “אדם פרא” אלא “פרא אדם” כי זו מהותו, כוח פראי שאיננו מרוסן, תכונה שאנו חשים בה עד היום.
לקראת סוף הפרשה הקב”ה משנה את שמותיהם:
אברם הופך לאברהם “כי אב המון גויים נתתיך”,
ושרַי הופכת לשרה, אם כל האומות.
ה’ מבטיח להם בן נוסף, יצחק, שדרכו תימשך הברית:
“ואת בריתי אקים את יצחק”.
בסוף הפרשה מצווה אברהם על ברית המילה, שהיא הסמל והברית הנצחית בינינו ובין הקב”ה:
“זאת בריתי אשר תשמרו ביני וביניכם ובין זרעך אחריך המול לכם כל זכר”.
ומי שאינו נמול “ונכרתה הנפש ההיא מעמיה” (בראשית י”ז י–י”ד).
אברהם עצמו נימול בגיל תשעים ותשע, דבר מדהים ונשגב.
יצא לי למול אדם בן חמישים, ואני זוכר את התחושות באותו רגע
אדם בוגר שמוכן להקריב ולשנות את גופו למען הברית עם בוראו.
מעשה כזה מבטא עוצמה של אמונה והתקרבות אמיתית לה’.
שנזכה כולנו להתקרב אל השם, לשמור על הברית שבינינו לבינו, ולהרגיש את קדושת החיים בעם ישראל ובכל אחד מאיתנו.
