Shabbat Shalom everyone
In this week’s Parasha, Vayera, we read about the angels who came to visit Avraham and Sarah. They told Avraham that Sarah would have a son, Yitzchak. When Sarah heard this, she laughed and said: “After I have grown old, shall I again have pleasure, and my husband is old?” (Bereishit 18:12).
Later, Hashem asked Avraham why Sarah laughed. But He changed her words a little and said: “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I really have a child, now that I am old?’” (18:13). Hashem didn’t say the part “and my husband is old.”
The Rabbis explain that Hashem changed her words to keep peace between husband and wife. From this we learn that peace is sometimes more important than saying the exact truth.
This teaches us something deep. Truth (emet) is one of the most important values in the Torah, as it says “The seal of Hashem is truth.” But peace (shalom) is even higher. The Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto) explains that being truthful also means knowing when and how to speak, so that our words bring kindness and not hurt.
Hashem teaches us that we should live with truth, but a truth that brings peace and love, not arguments or pain.
May we learn from Hashem to use our words with care and wisdom, to speak truthfully and gently, and to bring peace between people.

שבת שלום לכולם
בפרשת וירא אנו קוראים על ביקור המלאכים אצל אברהם ושרה. הם מבשרים לאברהם ששרה תלד בן, את יצחק. שרה שומעת זאת וצוחקת ואומרת “אחרי בלותי הייתה לי עדנה ואדוני זקן” (בראשית יח, יב).
כאשר הקב”ה פונה לאברהם ושואל מדוע צחקה שרה, הוא משנה את דבריה ואומר “למה זה צחקה שרה לאמור האף אמנם אלד ואני זקנתי”. הוא לא מזכיר את החלק שבו אמרה “ואדוני זקן”.
חז”ל מלמדים מכאן שהקב”ה שינה מדברי שרה כדי להשכין שלום בין איש לאשתו.
מכאן אנו לומדים יסוד עמוק. האמת היא ערך עליון בתורה, “חותמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא אמת”, אך יש ערך גבוה עוד יותר, והוא שלום. הרמח”ל מלמד ש”אמת” אמיתית איננה רק לומר כל דבר בדיוק כפי שהוא, אלא לדעת מתי וכיצד לומר אותו כדי לבנות ולא להרוס.
הקב”ה מלמד אותנו שהאדם צריך לחיות באמת, אך באמת שמביאה שלום ולא מחלוקת, באמת שמאירה ולא פוגעת.
שנזכה לדבר אמת מתוך אהבה ולבנות שלום בכל מקום שבו אנו נמצאים.
