Shabbat Shalom
This Shabbat we read Parashat Vayeshev.
It is a deep and powerful Parasha that tells us about the dreams of Yosef, the hatred of his brothers toward him, and his sale to Egypt. We also read about Yosef in the house of his master, the test with his master’s wife, his imprisonment, and later the dreams of the king’s butler and baker, which Yosef explains correctly.
There is an important and interesting point in the Parasha.
When the brothers wanted to kill Yosef, Reuven said to them: do not spill blood. Instead, throw him into the pit. The Torah tells us that Reuven’s plan was to return later and save Yosef.
Then the Torah adds a special detail:
“The pit was empty, there was no water in it.”
Chazal explain: there was no water, but there were snakes and scorpions inside.
This raises a strong question.
If Reuven wanted to save Yosef, how could he throw him into a pit full of snakes and scorpions? What kind of rescue is this?
The answer teaches us a deep lesson about free choice.
Reuven knew that Yosef was a righteous person. Because of that, he believed that animals like snakes and scorpions, which have no free choice, would not harm him. But human beings do have free choice. Even when standing in front of a righteous person, a human being can choose to do evil, even if it was not decreed from Heaven.
From here we learn how great the power of free choice is.
We have the ability to do great good, but also, Heaven forbid, to do great harm. This responsibility is in our hands every day.
May we all merit to use our power of choice in the right way,
to choose good, to increase kindness,
and to act for the good of our family, our community, and our people.

השבת בעזרת ה’ נקרא את פרשת וישב.
פרשה מרתקת ורבת עומק, העוסקת בחלומותיו של יוסף, בשנאת אחיו כלפיו ובמכירתו למצרים. בהמשך הפרשה אנו פוגשים את יוסף בבית אדוניו, את ניסיון הפיתוי של אשת פוטיפר, את שליחתו לבית הסוהר, ושם את חלומות שר המשקים ושר האופים, שיוסף פותר אותם כראוי.
יש בפרשה נקודה עמוקה ומעוררת מחשבה. כאשר האחים מבקשים להרוג את יוסף, ראובן מתערב ואומר: אל נשפוך דם, נשליך אותו אל הבור. התורה מגלה לנו שכוונתו של ראובן הייתה לחזור מאוחר יותר ולהציל את יוסף.
ואז התורה מדגישה:
“והבור ריק אין בו מים”.
חז״ל אומרים: מים לא היה בו, אבל נחשים ועקרבים היו בו.
והשאלה מתבקשת: אם ראובן רצה להציל את יוסף, כיצד הוא משליך אותו לבור מלא נחשים ועקרבים? איזו הצלה יש בכך?
התשובה מלמדת אותנו יסוד עמוק בבחירה החופשית.
ראובן ידע שיוסף צדיק, ולכן האמין שנחשים ועקרבים, שאין להם בחירה חופשית, לא יזיקו לו. אך בני אדם, גם כאשר הם אחים, גם כאשר עומד לפניהם אדם צדיק, יש להם בחירה חופשית, והם עלולים לבחור ברע אפילו אם לא נגזר כך משמים.
מכאן אנו לומדים עד כמה גדול כוח הבחירה שניתן לאדם. בידינו לבחור בטוב, אך חלילה גם ברע. האחריות הזו מחייבת אותנו בכל רגע.
יהי רצון שנזכה להשתמש בכוח הבחירה שלנו לעשות טוב, להרבות חסד, ולפעול לטובת המשפחה, הקהילה ועם ישראל.
