B”H This week we will read Parashat Ekev, the third parasha in Sefer Devarim.
The parasha opens with “Vehaya ekev tishme’un” (And it shall be, if you will listen). “Ekev” hints to an important idea: the reward from Hashem comes “as a result of” keeping the mitzvot. Moshe promises us, Am Yisrael, that if we listen and keep Hashem’s mitzvot, we will merit many blessings, protection, and victory over our enemies. Here lies an important foundation – when we do our part in serving Hashem, He takes care of us and fights our battles. We are not alone in the struggle; Hashem fights alongside us, as Moshe reminds them again and again.
The parasha and the haftarah speak a lot about memory. Moshe repeats and urges the people to remember all the miracles that Hashem did for them in the desert and the covenant they made with Him. He warns Am Yisrael about the danger of forgetting, which can sneak into the heart specifically during times of abundance and comfort. We must remember that all blessings come from Hashem and not from our own strength: “Ve’amarta bilvavecha kochi ve’otzem yadi asah li et hachayil hazeh” (And you will say in your heart, “My strength and the power of my hand made for me this wealth”) This remembering is not one-way. In the haftarah, Yeshayahu gives an emotional prophecy of comfort, reminding Am Yisrael that Hashem remembers us. Even in difficult moments, when we feel forgotten, Hashem remembers us. His remembering is the foundation of comfort.
In the parasha we will also read about the sin of the Golden Calf and the Luchot Habrit. Moshe reminds Am Yisrael of the sin of the Golden Calf and tells how he broke the first Luchot Habrit, which were given with a mighty voice from the heavens. This story is not only rebuke, but also a reminder of the power of teshuva and forgiveness. Moshe describes how he went up to the mountain again, prayed and pleaded, and received the second Luchot Habrit – the ones they carried with them in their journey through the desert, carrying a message of faith, hope, and promise. The second luchot are a symbol that there is always a way back, and always a chance to fix.
In our parasha we also find the second paragraph of Kriyat Shema, “Vehaya im shamoa tishme’u el mitzvotai” (And it shall be, if you will surely listen to My commandments), where Hashem tells us that if we listen to His voice, He will take care of all our needs.
May it be Hashem’s will that we merit a Shabbat full of light, peace, and hope. May we always remember Hashem’s kindness and know that at every moment, even when we feel alone, He remembers us and is with us.

השבוע נקרא בעזרת ה’ את פרשת עקב, הפרשה השלישית בספר דברים.
הפרשה פותחת ב “והיה עקב תשמעון”, מרמז על רעיון מרכזי: שכר ה’ בא “בעקבות” שמירת המצוות. משה מבטיח לנו, לעם ישראל שאם נקשיב ונקיים את מצוות ה’, אנו נזכה לברכות רבות, להגנה ולניצחון על אויבינו.
כאן טמון יסוד חשוב שכאשר אנחנו עושים את חלקנו בעבודת ה’, ה’ דואג לנו ומנצח עבורנו את המלחמות. אנו לא לבד במערכה; ה’ נלחם לצידנו, כפי שמשה מזכיר להם שוב ושוב.
הפרשה וההפטרה עוסקים רבות בזיכרון, משה חוזר ומפציר בעם לזכור את כל הנסים שעשה להם ה’ במדבר ואת הברית שכרתו איתו. הוא מזהיר את עם ישראל מפני הסכנה של השכחה, שעלולה להתגנב ללבם דווקא בזמן שפע ונוחות. לזכור שכל הברכות מגיעות מה’ ולא מכוחינו לנו, “וְאָמַרְתָּ בִּלְבָבֶךָ כֹּחִי וְעֹצֶם יָדִי עָשָׂה לִי אֶת הַחַיִל הַזֶּה”
הזיכרון הזה אינו חד-כיווני. בהפטרה, ישעיהו מנבא נבואת נחמה מרגשת, שבה הוא מזכיר לעם ישראל שה’ זוכר אותנו. גם ברגעים קשים, כאשר אנו מרגישים נשכחים, ה’ זוכר אותנו. הזיכרון של ה’ הוא הבסיס לנחמה.
בפרשה אנו נקרא גם על חטא העגל ולוחות הברית.
משה חוזר ומזכיר לעם ישראל את חטא העגל, והוא מספר כיצד הוא עצמו שבר את לוחות הברית הראשונים, שניתנו בקול אדיר מהשמיים. הסיפור הזה אינו רק תוכחה, אלא גם תזכורת לכוח התשובה והסליחה. משה מתאר כיצד עלה שוב להר, התפלל והתחנן, וקיבל את לוחות הברית השניים – אותם לוחות ששמורים איתם במסע דרך המדבר, ובהם מסר של אמונה, תקווה והבטחה. הלוחות השניים הם סמל לכך שתמיד ישנה דרך חזרה, ותמיד ישנה אפשרות לתקן.
בפרשתנו גם נמצא הפרשה השניה של קריאת שמע “וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ אֶל מִצְוֹתַי” ששם השם אומר לנו שאם נשמע בקולו הוא ידאג לכל צרכינו. ויהי רצון שנזכה לשבת מלאה באור, בשלווה ובתקווה. שנדע תמיד לזכור את חסדיו של ה’, ונדע שבכל רגע נתון, גם כשאנחנו מרגישים לבד, הוא זוכר אותנו ונמצא איתנו.
